Ocean & Weather – HURREVAC storm tracking with GeoServer
Sea Island Software, a US company, leads the development, operation, and maintenance of the HURREVAC program. HURREVAC (short for Hurricane Evacuation) is a storm tracking and decision support tool of the National Hurricane Program, administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the NOAA National Hurricane Center. The program combines live feeds of tropical cyclone forecast information with data from various state Hurricane Evacuation Studies to assist local emergency managers in determining the most prudent evacuation decision time and the potential for significant storm effects, such as wind and storm surge.
HURREVAC
HURREVAC is backed by GeoServer instances deployed in AWS, where GeoTIFFs and GRIB files are processed to scale the use of HURREVAC by Emergency Managers (up to 5,000 simultaneous users) in planning, decision-making and responding to tropical storm threats and evacuations. The data use in Hurrevac is complex and multidimensional. For example, having several time stamps that are required to properly understand storms. GeoServer support for multidimensional data is key in this project.
GeoSolutions supports Sea Island Software in a robust deployment of GeoServer in the AWS Cloud, as well as, integrating complex processing analytics in the system. For example, calculation on the fly of the surge worst case scenario or wind probabilities and rendering GeoTIFFS to the client.

The infrastructure, allows to generate custom reports, leveraging OGC Web Processing Services (WPS), for which a custom GeoServer plugin is being used.
