GeoSolutions at geOcom 2024

Dear Reader,

GeoSolutions has been presenting the latest version of MapStore at 2025 geOcom Conference. geOcom event is the place where geOrchestra community gathers annually and this year has been taking place in Rennes, France, from 23th to 23th of June.

geOrchestra is a free, modular and interoperable Spatial Data Infrastructure software born in 2009 to meet the requirements of the INSPIRE directive in Europe. geOcom event allows main players and newcomers to discover the geOrchestra community and its uses, issues in progress or to come, giving an opportunity to discover new platforms, current or future projects and build the roadmap for the upcoming releases.

This year, Tobia Di Pisa, Senior Project Manager at GeoSolutions, contributed two well-received presentations focused on some of the most exciting advancements in our portfolio: the Digital Twin Toolbox and MapStore. His sessions highlighted how we continue to push the boundaries of 3D data processing and user-centric geospatial interfaces — all leveraging open source technologies.

Leveraging Open Source Tools for Creating 3D Tiles in the Urban Environment

In this talk, Tobia introduced the latest developments of the Digital Twin Toolbox — a modular, Dockerized suite of open-source tools designed to streamline the creation of 3D Tiles from standard GIS datasets (e.g., SHP, LAS, TIF, GLB). The session covered:

  • The architecture of the Digital Twin Toolbox, built on FastAPI, Celery, and MapStore for streamlined asynchronous data processing and visualization.

  • Integration with geOrchestra, enabling administrators to leverage 3D workflows natively, including support for 3D Tile previews directly inside the MapStore viewer.

  • A practical demonstration using data from the Municipality of Florence to generate dense point clouds, 3D meshes, and textured tiles — all from open workflows.

  • Insights into future enhancements, including support for photogrammetry, CityGML, IFC, and LODs, expected across the next quarter.

MapStore at GeoCom 2025: A Year in Review

The second presentation took a deep dive into the evolution of MapStore, GeoSolutions’ flagship open source WebGIS product. The 2025.01 release introduced several powerful updates focused on usability, accessibility, and extensibility:

  • A completely revamped Home Page with advanced filtering, tagging, and catalog capabilities.

  • A modernized look & feel with a unified navbar and enhanced accessibility across the board.

  • Updates to MapStore’s 3D integration, including Cesium Ion terrain support and a new lighting model.

  • Improved Legend, Printing, and User Session management for more granular and user-friendly experiences.

  • Teasers of what’s coming in 2025.02, such as the Terrain Switcher, dark theme toggle, and better GeoFence rule management by IP and date validity.

A special thanks goes to Rennes Métropolecommunauté d’agglomération du Puy-en-VelayRégion Hauts-de-FranceRégion Grand-Est and Centre Régional Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes de l’Information Géographique (CRAIG) who have allowed the integration of MapStore with geOrchestra from the beginning in 2019 by also funding many new features which have effectively contributed to the evolution of MapStore.
